How do you free your mind if you are trapped in a body that barely moves?

Phyllis Woolf is an inspiration. A Cerebal Palsy Quad, she has only partial use of her left hand, the rest of her body is inert. She uses an electric wheelchair to get around, and her movement is extremely restricted.

This is her journey from trying to survive to learning to thrive. Against all odds, she goes on to face her demons, get a degree, build a house, parasail, scuba dive, swim with dolphins, ride an elephant, travel the world and peel a banana.

Sassy, but warm, funny and deeply insightful, she uses her own life as an example of what we can achieve if we take responsibility for who we are. In a society obsessed by material things, she is a constant reminder that we are not defined merely by our physical appearance, but also by the capacity of our minds and spirit. Her insights offer profound inspiration and perspective for us all - disabled or not.

'We have all come to this world to work - it's just that some of us are in a wheelchair.

Brent Meersman's memoir of a humble yet eccentric upbringing in a Milnerton, Cape Town, flat in the 1970's and 1980's reads as a stirring eulogy to his schizophrenic mother, yet also as a vivid snapshot in time.

His adoring mother, a horse-loving artist, received only rudimentary treatment and Brent, his brother and father had to look to each other for support. His father battled alcoholism and unemployment, at one point taking the whole family to Belgium, where he had found work, only for them to return a year later, defeated.

Traversing a home environment constantly on high alert for something to go wrong, waiting for his mother's fragile mental stability to shatter, not finding support in his father, whose drinking and absences from home took a punishing toll on the family, bred in the author an almost heroic resilience.

This delicate yet brutal memoir, filled with wry humour, will resonate with many readers.

Memoirs of a much-loved teacher and legendary headmaster of Pretoria Boys High.
Bill Schroder is the stuff teaching legends are made of. He was strict, yet kind; firm and consistent, yet creative and playful when needed. He knew the magical mix of discipline and care needed to ensure the loyalty of his students. In this warm-hearted, inspiring and often funny memoir, Schroder looks back on four decades as an English and Latin teacher and, later, headmaster, including 19 years at Pretoria Boys High.

His holistic approach to teaching earned him the respect of both teachers and students. Teaching is not only about conveying knowledge, he believed, but also about looking after the emotional needs of students. For Schroder, the institution was never more important than the individual - he always put his students first. As a headmaster he became known for doing things his own way. He gave students a voice where others wanted to silence them, he found creative ways to turn problem schools around and never allowed departmental admin to get in the way of teaching. In the early 1990s when schools were opened to all races, Pretoria Boys High under him played a leading role in transforming their school. In his retirement he also served as a consultant and a mentor to a school in a Pretoria township.

Here is a teacher who left an indelible mark on thousands of pupils from Cape Town to Pretoria.

In 1942, the Gestapo sent out an urgent transmission: 'She is the most dangerous of all Allied spies. We must find and destroy her.'

The target in their sights was Virginia Hall, a Baltimore socialite who talked her way into Special Operations Executive, the spy organization dubbed Winston Churchill's 'Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare.' She became the first Allied woman deployed behind enemy lines and--despite her prosthetic leg--helped to light the flame of the French Resistance, revolutionizing secret warfare as we know it.

Virginia established vast spy networks throughout France, called weapons and explosives down from the skies, and became a linchpin for the Resistance. Even as her face covered wanted posters and a bounty was placed on her head, Virginia refused order after order to evacuate. She finally escaped through a death-defying hike over the Pyrenees into Spain, her cover blown. But she plunged back in, adamant that she had more lives to save, and led a victorious guerilla campaign, liberating swathes of France from the Nazis after D-Day.

Based on new and extensive research, Sonia Purnell has for the first time uncovered the full secret life of Virginia Hall--an astounding and inspiring story of heroism, spycraft, resistance, and personal triumph over shocking adversity.

Ton Vosloo's remarkable career in the media spanned nearly 60 years in South Africa's history. During this turbulent time, South Africa went through the transition from Afrikaner Nationalist rule to an ANC government. At the helm of the leading press group founded in 1913 to support nascent Afrikaner nationalism, Vosloo's story is not just one of newspapers and politics but also one of singular business and commercial success as the Naspers Group evolved from a print
group to an electronic company with significant investments across the world. In 1983 Vosloo was appointed managing director of Naspers and set about vigorously transforming the group. On the ideological front, it was a fight to the death with the old Transvaal's predominantly right-wing Perskor Group for the soul of the Afrikaner.

It was a dark and stormy night in 1991 when a magician took over the bridge of the Oceanos, an ageing passenger liner travelling up the Wild Coast. The captain was nowhere to be found.

The ship started taking in water in the auxiliary engine room just a few hours after it had set sail from East London. Panicking, the crew scrambled into the lifeboats, leaving passengers largely to fend for themselves.

The ship's entertainment staff bravely started to calm passengers and coordinated the abandon-ship operation and rescue effort. Lifeboats were launched in waves of several metres high and mothers with children and the elderly were given first priority. When they ran out of useable lifeboats 230 passengers and junior crew were left stranded on board the listing and rapidly sinking ship.

The South African Air Force then launched their biggest air rescue ever, with helicopter crews and Navy divers risking everything to evacuate the remaining passengers. One by one the passengers were airlifted off the ship - one of the first was Captain Yiannis Avranas, who was universally condemned for his lack of leadership. Eventually all 571 people on board were rescued in what to date remains one of the greatest maritime rescues in South African history. The story of this dramatic rescue, which made headlines across the world, is told from the perspective of all the key role players and describes their extraordinary heroism.
It also explains how the investigation into the loss.

In her much anticipated memoir, Sisonke Msimang writes about her exile childhood in Zambia and Kenya, young adulthood and college years in North America, and returning to South Africa in the euphoric 1990s. She reflects candidly on her discontent and disappointment with present-day South Africa but also on her experiences of family, romance, and motherhood, with the novelist's talent for character and pathos.
Militant young comrades dance off the pages of the 1970s Lusaka she invokes, and the heady and naive days of just-democratic South Africa in the 1990s are as vividly painted. Her memoir is at heart a chronicle of a coming-of-age, and while well-known South African political figures appear in these pages, it is an intimate story, a testament to family bonds and sisterhood.

Sisonke Msimang is one of the most assured and celebrated voices commenting on the South African present - often humorously; sometimes deeply movingly - and this book launches her to an even broader audience.

9 April 1960 was the day that changed Susie Cazenove's life - the day her father, David Pratt, shot the Prime Minister of South Africa, Dr Hendrik Verwoerd. Verwoerd, commonly known as the architect of apartheid, didn't die, but Pratt's family lived with the legacy of his action.Caezenove has put pen to paper to describe the extraordinary events of that day and its consequences. Part family memoir, part ode to the settlement of Johannesburg, Cazenove skilfully weaves her family history and the mood in South Africa in the 1950s and 60s as a background to what may have led her father, a farmer and gentle man, to commit a treasonous act. Some of the facts went to the grave with her father, leaving the family with many questions.

The intimate and personal story behind the man who tried to kill Verwoerd but didn't succeed.
“The raucous wail of sirens pierced the quiet Saturday afternoon, making me drop my book and rush outside to see what drama was taking place. A fleet of cars, their sirens screaming, roared along Oxford Road two hundred yards from our house. I stood on the lawn wondering what on earth it was because sirens were rarely heard near our home. I went back inside; the commotion was over. But within half an hour our telephone started ringing non-stop . . .”

9 April 1960 was the day that changed Susie Cazenove's life - the day her father, David Pratt, shot the Prime Minister of South Africa, Dr Hendrik Verwoerd. Verwoerd, commonly known as the architect of apartheid, didn't die, but Pratt's family lived with the legacy of his action.

A chance encounter with the late David Rattray of Fugitive's Drift led Cazenove to revisit the memories of that terrible day. With Rattray's encouragement she put pen to paper to describe the extraordinary events of that day and its consequences. Part family memoir, part ode to the settlement of Johannesburg, Cazenove skilfully weaves her family history and the mood in South Africa in the 1950s and 60s as a background to what may have led her father, a farmer and gentle man, to commit a treasonous act.

Tumi Morake modelled her public persona on her mother, a charming and contentious woman who used her big, bold voice to say what others were afraid to utter. It's the personality that Tumi took on stage in the mostly male space of stand-up comedy, and the one that gave her the courage to join a white, Afrikaans radio station and comment about apartheid on air.

But there's only so much you can find out about Tumi from the stage, the screen and the internet. And Then Mama Said… is the voice of Tumi in private, as well as a behind-thescenes perspective of a pioneering South African star who has been both deeply loved and viciously hated by her audiences.

Tumi gets frank about the race row at Jacaranda FM; the Jaguar car accident that cyber bullies said she deserved; the body-shaming she endured on the set of Our Perfect Wedding; and her tumultuous relationship with her beloved husband. Throughout her story, she carries the voice of her mother, and with it the indispensable life lessons that made her who she is today.

'n Buitengewone en uitstekende manuskrip.” - Prof. Gerrit Olivier

On 17 September 1944, General Kurt Student, the founder of Nazi Germany's parachute forces, heard the growing roar of aero engines. He went out on to his balcony above the flat landscape of southern Holland to watch the vast air armada of Dakotas and gliders, carrying the British 1st Airborne and the American 101st and 82nd Airborne Divisions. He gazed up in envy at the greatest demonstration of paratroop power ever seen.

Operation Market Garden, the plan to end the war by capturing the bridges leading to the Lower Rhine and beyond, was a bold concept: the Americans thought it unusually bold for Field Marshal Montgomery. But the cost of failure was horrendous, above all for the Dutch who risked everything to help. German reprisals were cruel and lasted until the end of the war.

The British fascination for heroic failure has clouded the story of Arnhem in myths, not least that victory was possible when in fact the plan imposed by Montgomery and General 'Boy' Browning was doomed from the start. Antony Beevor, using many overlooked and new sources from Dutch, British, American, Polish and German archives, has reconstructed the terrible reality of this epic clash. Yet this book, written in Beevor's inimitable and gripping narrative style, is about much more than a single dramatic battle. It looks into the very heart of war.

Five bank robberies. Fifteen years in jail. That was the sentence handed down to Allan Heyl in 1977. He was 26 years old and couldn't face that many years behind bars. And then he got lucky. Into the prison walked Andre Stander, ex-cop and bank robber - an outlaw through and through. 'We're going to get out of here,' said Stander. 'We're going to rob banks.' And that is exactly what they did. In this fast-paced, no-holds-barred, no-punches-pulled memoir, Heyl exposes the hell of prison life, revels in the sheer gung-ho audacity of robbing banks, and reveals an inept and incompetent police force. As a member of the notorious 'Stander Gang', which both appalled and enthralled South Africans in the late '70s and early '80s, Allan became a career criminal. But this choice of lifestyle had its consequences … With humour, insight and self-revelation, the last surviving member of the so-called Stander Gang turns a critical eye on himself and the times in which he operated. This book takes you into the heart of a bank robber.
